The Mysteries of Beauty - She needs your help!

We all know the old adage “Beauty is only skin deep.” Recently the Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) in Leander, Texas discovered yet again that sometimes the true beauty is the spirit of an animal—not what you see on the outside. BEAUTY was the surprise waiting at the shelter gate on Friday, August 8th, a sad and bedraggled young female Weimaraner; her eyes pleaded with the staff for help and comfort, her gentleness apparent from the first moment.

Beauty was skeletal, covered in fleas and ticks, her nails had grown so long she could barely walk and she was suffering from an unknown skin condition. Following a medical assessment it was discovered that a biopsy had been done on her throat in the past but the stitches had never been removed, and her lymph nodes were swollen. Beauty had been on her own and neglected for a long time.

She is a mystery, well behaved and well trained. Beauty heels on a leash, has great social skills, she clearly has had obedience training, she is about three years old. Where did she come from? The staff asked her but she has kept silent about her past and seems to be looking towards a shining new future with excitement. It will be a long, arduous and costly convalescence hopefully leading to complete recovery.

The feeling persists with the HSWC staff that she some how misplaced a caring owner who is still looking for her. Maybe there is a vet out in the Texas yonder that will recognize our gal Beauty. The Shelter staff hopes that someone will recognize Beauty and help us find her missing owner. Right now she is content and has made the Shelter Office her temporary home.

The HSWC “Abby Angel Fund” that helps the Shelter pay for the long term medical care of our animals has been depleted by the costly surgeries of two of our dogs, Bentley and Poppy, and the veterinarian bills for a severely burned dog, Baxter. Beauty needs a benefactor! Please help us raise the funds needed to cover her medical expenses; we are confident that she will turn out to be as beautiful on the outside as she is in so many other ways. Of all the mysteries that surround Beauty, there is nothing mysterious about her ability to love!

Please help us continue to care for pets like Beauty, Bently, Baxter, and Poppy by donating to the Humane Society of Williamson County’s “Abby Angel Fund."

Angel Abby is watching over us

Many of you may remember Abby, the HSWC's beloved resident dog for several years. When she passed away in 2005, the board of directors created the Abby Angel Fund in her memory to help animals arriving at the shelter in need of veterinary attention, for which no budgeted funds are available.

Abby is watching over the animals that arrive at the shelter and she's Twittering about them and the goings-on at the HSWC, too! Follow her at https://twitter.com/AngelAbby

Sound crazy? She's not the only Twittering pet - check out the others at Pettweets.org and add them to the Twitterers you follow!

Web-savvy volunteers needed!

As mentioned in my last post, HSWC has gone social and now we need your help!

  • We need volunteers to write or aggregate pet training articles and pet safety tips to be posted on this blog.

  • AngelAbby is on Twitter at https://twitter.com/AngelAbby and we need people to follow her, Tweet as her, Tweet with her, and promote her!

  • Stay on top of our Facebook page making friends, accepting and sending invitation, finding applications that fit our cause, and generally making updates, as well as promoting the Friends of the Humane Society of Williamson County group!
So drop a comment here or email HSWCangelabby@gmail.com if you'd like to volunteer!

Pets are social creatures!

It's time to get this social network purring. The Humane Society of Williamson County is digging right into social media. First stop: this blog. Why blog? It's quick and easy to maintain and we can have guest bloggers from our cadre of volunteers to help us provide HSWC center updates, featured pets, volunteer and wish list needs, donation needs to help Abby Angel Fund patients, upcoming event information, and even pet training tools and tricks. So we're excited to be here and hope you enjoy our new social presence!

Soon we'll be announcing our presence on other social sites, as well. Stay tuned!
